I Want To Be Mr. Potato Head

Yuko and I were listening to the radio the other day and an interview with Don Rickles came on the air. Don Rickles is a comedian who's been around for fifty years and who played Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story I and II. Right there you can tell a fine performer. (I bet Mr. PH's trailer was pimp...) Little did I know that the ol' sour puss didn't actually hate people, started out in strip clubs, and had been in the navy in WWII.

And this, boys and girls, is where we begin our story...

Young Mr. Rickles enlisted in the navy and survived World War II, so right there he's doing pretty well. He got out in his early twenties and tried his hand at show business. He did small time work as an actor, but it wasn't working out so well so he took off toward stand-up instead. And when I say stand-up, I mean he was standing on top of a bar at 9 a.m. watching the blue-hairs mow down the early bird special and the drunks suck back the first round. That'll put some hair on your chest.

He worked strip clubs, insulting every poor sod who had the misfortune to sit close by. Eventually, he played in front of the king of crooners, Frank Sinatra, and they got to be chums. Life started to clip along. He did drama, he did comedy, he roasted Dean Martin (hilarious, check it out on YouTube). The spuds at Pixar came around, took a look at his giant melon and were inspired to make him Head Potato in volumes one and two of toy Story. Now you know he's made it.

Mr. Warmth is like a heckler nightmare. You don't have a chance to heckle him because he's already tearing you to pieces, and yo mama, too. The thing that makes his style work is that he really doesn't mean any harm. He attacks everybody of all races and religions, but he's so clearly joking that people go from a moment of indignation to laughing so hard they cry. He doesn't even like it when you say he's an insult comedian, he calls it exaggeration: He's not making fun of the people, he's just exaggerating the traits about them that are real. It's a good thing he was grandfathered in to the comedy scene because it's a battle against Political Correctness out there, people. If I'm too much for you by finding the humor in the disabled scene, try Don Rickles on for size...

He used to end his shows with a two-minute speech about how we're all human beings and we should stop killing each other. How's that for sensitivity. And see, the thing I related to with Mr. PH is that he's the king of reverse heckling and I'm all about teasing in reverse. Are you seeing this dynamic? Are you picking up what I'm putting down?

If I make it as long as he does, I hope my wife has as many diamonds as his wife, and I hope people love me as much as they love him. Hey, a guy can dream.

Big up, Mr. Potato Head.

love,
Joshie

Mawage

So I've been meaning to tell you about this little marriage I was in a little while ago. It seems like it was yesterday cuz I've been so busy, touring, working on the Comedy Central gig, raising a kid, all that. But I feel like I should bring it up now, since we're close and all. My little love-marmots, you want all the kissy details, don't you? Well, here goes.

Do you mind?

See, Yuko and I have been together for a while now, and we love each other and all that, and plus we have a kid. So a while back I proposed. She said, "Hey, why not? I've got nothing better to do." And then there we were, on a Colorado mountain with all of our friends and Chuck Roy as our lovable hunka hunka minister. Up until the day of (I think it was sometime in June, but don't quote me), we were thinking it'd just be a quiet ceremony with a couple of friends and some tweeting birds and leafing trees. Like I said, we'd been together for a while and we love each other and it was no big deal. I got dressed in the car, as you can see from one of the photos.

Wedding

Ahh, the paparazzi!

Smile

But then we were up there, and Yuko looked so angelic and frilly, and it was like when Simon was born when the world got still and clear and you realize how simple life really is, and we just complicate it with silly stuff. We wrote our own vows about how we feel about each other and the reasons we decided to get married. And when I said them I wasn't just telling her some story, I really meant it. It wasn't something that I did casually, even though it could have been that way. I'm not trying to get all deep on you all here, I'm just talking about what it was like that day in Genesee. It was a bigger step than we realized it would be, and I'm glad I took it.

Family Smiles

And then there was cake. Check out the photos of me and the fam, they're taken by our friend Liz Kover. She rocks! Other people took pictures too, but they'd have charged me money to use them.

Da Cake

Here, have some cake

Go snuggle the one you love,

Josh

Kansas City gives thanks!

Many thanks to Josh for an outstanding three day run at Kansas City's world famous Improv!  To make the town more inviting, KC sent their lovable losers, the Royals, to New York.  It certainly made the air more breathable.  Now that I think about it, the Improv is located in an area of KC known as Zona Rosa, which my dirty spanish translates to Red Zone, which would explain why no Chiefs ever make it over there.

Josh's set was impressive, with several new bits that kept the flow fresh and funny, yet still ackward for god fearing red state republicans to swallow.  I suspect the Sunday night crowd, who I especially enjoyed seeing go from a legitmate "What did he say?" to a  fearful, God help me, "What did he say!?"  Yes Kansas City, Josh's live show ain't what you saw on Last Comic Standing, is it?  I kind of felt sorry for those, who more than likely skipped Sunday's second service to attend,  but then again, I suspect Wednesday will have a higher than normal turnout at local holy watering holes.  Local men of the cloth would do well to preach on the scorn of profanity in their sermons and watch the coffers fill up....

Josh, best of luck to you and your family.  Leave 'em laughing my friend!

Man Love

Folks, I never thought I'd be this in love with a dude before.

But I love 'im. I love that little milk-breathed, poopy-smelling, cry-baby baby of mine. We spend all of our free time together. I tell him about my gigs and time on the road, and he tells me about his awesome meals with Mom and all the stuff he wants me to buy him in the future. Okay, I guess he burps up his awesome meals with Mom and I'm the one imagining all the things I'm going to get him. But it's just cuz he's so dang cute and cuddly-wuddly.

Uh oh, I just made someone in cyberspace puke. Sorry man.

Seriously people, Yuko's been leaving me with Simon for hours at a time. What is she thinking?? I have trouble feeding MYSELF, how can I be trusted to feed and clothe an infant, much less one of my own making? But she does, and I've managed not to injure either of us for over a month now. It's good that she's come to expect that we'll both need to be changed when she returns. For the first year of our relationship it was awkward that it was just me. Now at least there's someone who logically requires her attention.

Other than paternal bliss, it's just another day, another joke in the making. I can't wait for the little dude to start crawling so we can have races around the house. But I get knee pads because I'm old and no one likes to see a grown man with rug burn.

Smooches,

Pops

There are a few naughty words in this here article, but has some tidbits that might be entertaining for you all:

Aaaand... after that, it's basically all kid photos:

Father/son bonding moment--check! Now all I have to do is send him to college. I call it, "Car ride with booties." Art world, look out.

After a night of heavy drinking...

My mommy DOES think I'm special. But right now she thinks this little man is special-er. Who could blame her.

Josh Blue and his son Simon Blue

After my shows all I can think about is getting back to see the babe. He grows inches every time I go to work. I think he's growing right now, just to confuse me.  Yuko is doing awesome, rocking the motherhood thing. The two of them are in love with each other. Even when I come home she doesn't want to give him up. It's pretty darn domestic in here.

Which is good because taxes are SCARY.

Kisses,

Josh
